Vanessa McGowan is a New Zealand born upright and electric bassist, vocalist and session musician currently based in Nashville Tennessee.

Vanessa grew up in Auckland New Zealand, completing a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Bass at Auckland University and touring with jazz greats saxophonist Michael Brecker, vocalist Diane Schurr and drummer Steve Smith before moving to Las Vegas Nevada to study for a Masters of Music in Jazz Bass on scholarship with bass tutor Tom Warrington.

While there she performed with saxophonist Chris Potter, drummer Joe La Barbera, trumpeter Ingrid Jensen and vocalists Marlena Shaw and Ruth Brown, and after graduating moved to the UK, living in London for 4 years while working as a freelance upright and electric bassist and music tutor.

Having built up a wide range of experience on bass in jazz, pop, country, folk and classical music, Vanessa began singing and formed the band that would become Tattletale Saints ; a project led by Vanessa and guitarist, vocalist and acclaimed songwriter, Cy Winstanley.

At the end of 2013 Vanessa spent 3 months with the touring Broadway production of Wicked, playing upright, electric and fretless bass.

Vanessa now makes her home in Nashville TN, working as a freelance bassist, backing vocalist and session musician

Also an experienced band and tour manager, Vanessa was a finalist for “Breakthrough Manager” and “Self Managed Artist of the Year” in the 2014 New Zealand Music Managers Awards.

Vanessa plays Aguilar Amps and Fender electric basses.
